I can hear it now: "But they're old, celibate bishops. What do they know?"
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the African bishops have a lot more knowledge about Africa than most anyone else not from Africa. The above argument sounds to me more like this: "But they're Catholic. What do they know?"
This is just a snippet of what they said:
They affirmed, "Instead of preventing the spread of the disease, and without even guaranteeing complete security, [the condom] heightens human selfishness, worsens the problem, and encourages people to let themselves be driven by their sexual instincts and divests sexuality of its religious and symbolic functions."
